Hi everyone xxx

Happy New Year and welcome 2012! I'm so glad to see the end of 2011 and all that Christmas jazz! Im sure alot of women can sympathise with me when I say how much I dread the lead up to Christmas and the stress it involves. However, I did manage to get my cards posted on time (although the messages inside were brief to say the least!), and bought presents for those who were on the list. The kids had a ball and Santa scored 100% by delivering all that he'd been asked. Thanks Santa!

However, there were a few moments like this one........

Our family caravanning adventure was.....well.......an adventure to say the least! We bought a 1985 van in December to enable us to holiday over Christmas and to provide accommodation on short trips during this year.

My Mum kept saying "I think you are in love with the dream of caravanning, but have forgotten what it is actually like".......Dont you just hate it when you have to admit that someone else was right!

This is our van loaded onto the Bruny Island Ferry.....

But in my mind, this is what I thought we looked like...

Retro, chic, and dressed in floral...we SO werent.

Ahhhhh... There is nothing quite like doing the walk of shame past camping neighbours the morning after the night before, knowing that they have been subjected to the sounds of the 4yr old hysterically protesting that he "cant go to sleep EVERY night Mum!!!" or the nocturnal demands for yet another bottle from the 2yr old between 3am and 5am... One poor couple in a tent beside us were packed up and gone rather quickly one morning - I dont think they even rolled up their sleeping bags properly! They were headed far far away! I dont blame them.

I have to admit that the best campsite we stayed at was beside my parent's house. Must've been the free laundry, spotless bathroom and extra pair of hands to care for the kids!

Caravanning was actually quite fun, but with the kids there were plenty of tense moments. It has taken us a full week back home to recover, and as I write, the caravan sits in our front yard just as we stepped out of it on New Year's Day. Still fully stocked with our holiday clothes, bedding, food etc. I just cant bring myself to tackle the clean out....

  1. oh i hear you - although i dont't have kids! i've done a year in a kombi and found out how un-romantic it all is. especially the living in each others front and back yards at caravan parks/camping spots. if it makes you feel any better, i get your neighbours weren't that put off by you, cos any seasoned caravaner knows that lack of privacy is just a part of the 'freedom'.

  2. Great post - it gets easier as they get older - Promise!!! My boys now camp out overnight in my Tilly. It's great - they get the caravan holiday and I get the luxury of my own bed - it's a win win! Plus it's really cheap :)

  3. Hi Isis, I cant believe you spent a year in a kombi! Although I spent a year living in a backpacker's hostel so maybe it is as bad? All part of the fun of youth though eh!
